Keep a conference awake
after lunch

8 min readUses Survey analysisContent capture

The short version

  1. 1Aim at 2pm, not 9am. The morning runs on coffee. The afternoon needs help.
  2. 2One link for everything. Photos, polls and questions in the album people already opened.
  3. 3Read one answer out loud. Nothing gets more replies than proof someone is listening.

Five nudges, for the long afternoon

1Step 1 of 5

Give attendees one link on day one

Every extra app, form and QR code at a conference costs you attention. Give attendees one album link on the badge, the lanyard card and the first slide, and put everything in it: photos, polls, questions.

Ask for the first photo early, in the coffee queue: "Your view from the coffee line." Once someone has added one photo, they have the album open, and every later nudge is one tap away.

Run a poll straight after lunch

The first session after lunch is the hardest slot of the day. Open it with a poll in the album, before the speaker says a word: a quick, slightly spicy question about the topic.

Show the result live and let the speaker react to it. A split answer gives them something to argue with, and a crowd that just voted wants to know who won.

Keep it to one question with three or four options. A poll is a jolt, not a survey.

Collect questions all day, not just at the end

The awkward silence at "any questions?" isn't a lack of questions. It's a lack of courage. Let attendees send questions into the album during the talk, and the moderator picks the best ones.

You get better questions, from quieter people, and nobody gets the mic for a ten-minute "more of a comment". Answers stay with the album, so you can see later which sessions sparked the most.

Conference engagement ideas for the hallway

Some of the best moments happen between sessions, and nobody photographs them. Give the hallway its own prompts: "the best slide you've seen today", "someone you just met", "your notebook so far".

Change the prompt for each break. It gives people a reason to open the album again, and by the end of the day you have a record of the conference that no photographer could shoot.

These are the conference engagement ideas that cost almost nothing: a new prompt, announced in one sentence, at every break.

Read the answers back, then end on one question

Before the closing session, look through the answers. Survey analysis gives written answers a theme and tone pass, so you see what people said, and how warmly, without reading every reply.

Then have the host read out one real answer and one result from the day. It proves someone was listening, and it gets more answers next time.

End with one last question in the album: "What will you do differently on Monday?". It's the best feedback you'll get, and a lovely closing slide next year.

Steal this

Copy these for the emcee, the screens and the close.

Post-lunch poll

“Quick one before we start. Open the album and vote: what's slowing your team down most right now? A) Meetings B) Tools C) Hiring D) Honestly, lunch.”

Emcee line between sessions

“New prompt for this break: the best slide you've seen today. Add it to the album with the QR on the screen, and we'll show a few before the closing talk.”

Closing question

“Last one, then you're free: what's one thing you'll do differently on Monday? Answer in the album, it's open till Wednesday.”

Fair questions

What are good conference engagement ideas?

A live poll at the start of the first afternoon session, questions sent in during talks rather than at the end, a new photo prompt at every break, and one answer read out loud before the close. Keep it all in one link attendees already have.

How do you keep conference attendees engaged after lunch?

Open the first afternoon session with a quick poll and show the result live, then let the speaker react to it. A crowd that just voted wants to see who won.

Do attendees need to download a conference app?

Not for this. With MyWrap, attendees scan a QR or open one link, and photos, polls and questions all live inside the album in their browser.

How do you collect audience questions at a conference?

Let people send questions into the album during the talk, and have the moderator pick the best ones. You'll hear from quieter attendees and skip the long "more of a comment".

What do we do with all the answers afterwards?

Read them by theme and tone, pull out a few real quotes, and use them in the debrief and in next year's programme. Answers stay with the album, so they're there when you need them.
